“We want to headline Glastonbury” boldly states NOISY singer Cody Matthews. This may not be as far-fetched as it seems, with the future being nothing but bright for the Worthing trio who perfectly match-up a unique euphoric maximalist blend of alternative and anthemic rock with impressive electronica influences.
Emerging from the South-Coast town of Worthing in early 2020, the trio (comprising of singer Cody Matthews, guitarist and producer Spencer Tobias-Williams and Connor Cheetham on synths and guitar) have won fans with a sound that combines the much loved Chemical Brothers, Chase & Status and The Prodigy, with the living-for-the-weekend lyrics of Happy Mondays and The Streets.
“We’ve always been inspired by these big euphoric bands and we want to emulate what they did. Make the best music we possibly can and go on the road and play to as many people as humanly possible.”
Making music together since the age of 14, the trio were formed out of the ashes of an indie band which eventually ran its course. Working shifts as cleaners at the local hospital by day and working on music at night, their day jobs inspired the trio to create escapist anthems that celebrated the adrenaline rush of letting off steam at the weekend.
This is a key ingredient for their latest single, ‘RUDEBOY. Rude by name, rude by nature, the new offering is an attitude-driven anthem and a powerhouse statement of being weekend millionaires living in the music. Singer Cody commented “RUDEBOY is about feeling completely locked into music, whether you’re in a club, or in a packed tent at a festival or on a night bus with your headphones on. When it hits the music takes you and you can’t think about anything else. It started with the lyric “I put my shades on”. I was just thinking about being at a festival, with the sun shining and feeling euphoric.”
Their first release, the Press Space To Play EP introduced the world to their uncompromising yet euphoric sound, winning fans in everyone from Annie Mac to Jack Saunders on Radio 1, and High Contrast, who eventually went on to remix their track 24/7 in 2021. “He’s an absolute hero of ours so it was incredible that he wanted to remix one of our tracks” says Cody.
After over a year of working solidly on music, the pandemic stopped the trio in their tracks just days after a triumphant live show at the Camden Assembly. But, not ones to be derailed and true to their DIY ethos, the band hunkered down to writing music on Zoom sessions. Emerging with more new music, written, recorded and produced solely by the band at their home studio, they set about performing raucous high-profile sets at Reading and Leeds, a sold-out headline show at XOYO, a set supporting Mike Skinner and a run of dates as main tour support for Yungblud. “There’s mad energy and mosh pits at our shows,” explains Cody. “But supporting Yungblud was an amazing experience too as you have to go out and win over someone else’s crowd every night.”
They were also preparing to embark on tour but almost had to cancel when their tour van and all of their equipment was stolen from outside their tour manager’s flat one night. With a never say die attitude though, the trio came across some of their equipment on eBay and planned a sting operation to get it back. “It’s the most mental thing we’ve ever done,” says Connor. “We turned up at the guy’s house and had hired a bouncer to help take the equipment back. But there was no way we were going to let this ruin everything we had worked towards.”
Since then, the trio have gone on to collaborate with The Prototypes, Zero and 1991 and their single ‘Yung Dumb’ soundtracked the official trailer for FIFA 22 and an O2 advert.
With a hugely engaged fanbase, 2023 is looking like NOISY’s year as they relaunch their much anticipated club night FAST FWD TO FRIDAY (which combines their live set with a club experience) and look ahead to working on a debut album.
“It’s something we feel no one else is really doing at the moment,” explains Spencer. “DJs have their own club nights obviously but there’s not really bands doing anything similar. We’re gonna play and DJ and invite some of our favourite artists along too and hopefully take it around the country. We feel like we don’t always fit in, so we wanted to create our own little eco-system which allows us to get closer to our fans and for them to have the full NOISY experience.”
Promising bigger hooks, bigger choruses and even more energy on their forthcoming music, the NOISY juggernaut looks unstoppable. Next stop Glastonbury.
